Why choose a King XL?

A King XL gives us extra length compared with a standard King mattress while keeping the same generous width. That's useful if one or both sleepers are taller than average, if we like to stretch out, or if we want a mattress that comfortably fits standard King headboards and bases but adds extra foot-room. In South Africa a King XL mattress is commonly 183 cm wide by 200 cm long - about the same width as a standard King with an extra length advantage. This guide focuses on how that size fits into real South African homes and what to check before we buy.

Measure first: the simple room-fit test

Before we shop, measure the bedroom ceiling-to-floor wall lengths, the door clearances and the route the bed will take from entry to its final place. For a King XL mattress (183 cm x 200 cm) the room needs more than the mattress footprint: allow at least 60-75 cm clear space at the sides and foot for moving around, drawers and bedside tables. That means a comfortable minimum room width is about 3.3 m and a minimum length about 3.5 m when you include circulation space and furniture.

Quick measuring checklist

Measure the narrowest door, corridor and stair width the bed must pass through.
Measure ceiling height for tall headboards or storage above the bed.
Note window locations, wall radiators and plug points that might limit placement.

Plan furniture and circulation, not just mattress size

We often think only of the mattress footprint, but bed frames, bases and headboards add width and length. Slatted bases or storage bases add height and can affect how much visible floor space remains. If we keep bedside tables, factor in their depth (often 40-50 cm) and whether their drawers need to open freely. Sliding wardrobe doors are preferable where space is tight; hinged doors need extra clearance.

Examples of common room layouts

Bedroom with built-in cupboards along one wall: place the King XL with its long side to the cupboards to keep circulation clear.
Narrow but long bedroom: position the bed so the length runs along the room (headboard on the short wall) to keep walking space beside it.
Rooms with low ceilings or loft rooms: choose low-profile frames to avoid a cramped feel.

Mattress base and bedding considerations

A King XL mattress will typically fit standard King headboards but bases can vary. If we choose an extra-length base or an adjustable base, confirm both mattress and base lengths match (200 cm is the usual King XL length in South Africa). Bedding needs to match the extra length: fitted sheets and protectors labelled "King Extra Length" or "King XL" fit best. Height and access

Think about overall bed height: mattress height plus frame height affects ease of getting in and out. Taller people may prefer a slightly higher mattress. If mobility is a concern, choose a base that keeps the combined height at a comfortable level (ideally knee height when sitting on the edge).
